Why Quality Shipping Matters: Protecting Your Artwork from Studio to Doorstep

When investing in original artwork, whether framed or on canvas, ensuring it reaches you in perfect condition is as important as the piece itself. While some may see shipping costs as an unnecessary extra, the truth is that safe, secure, and professional delivery is essential for preserving the integrity of the artwork.

Why Do Quality Shipping Costs Seem High?

Unlike mass-produced items, original artworks require special care and handling. Each piece is unique, fragile, and often irreplaceable. Unlike prints, which I can send via my printers using Royal Mail First Class, original pieces need custom packaging and a reliable shipping partner. This is why I use Mail Boxes ETC (MBE), a specialist courier service known for its expertise in handling valuable and delicate shipments.

Yes, it’s more expensive—but the cost reflects the high level of protection and service that ensures your artwork arrives exactly as intended. Investing in proper shipping safeguards your artwork against potential damage, delays, or loss, which could be devastating for both the collector and the artist.

The Shipping Process: How Your Artwork Is Handled

I take every step necessary to ensure your piece is packaged securely and shipped with care:

  1. Custom Packaging: Each artwork is protected using a double-boxed system with reinforced edges, corner protectors, and impact-resistant materials. For framed pieces, additional padding is used to prevent movement inside the box. Depending on the size and nature of the artwork, extra protective measures may be applied to ensure its security during transit.

  2. Specialist Couriers: Unlike standard postal services, Mail Boxes ETC specialises in handling fragile, high-value items, reducing the risk of damage or mishandling. They have experience in shipping fine art and understand the importance of careful handling throughout the entire process.

  3. Tracking & Support: Once dispatched, you will receive tracking details so you can monitor your artwork’s journey. Having full visibility over the shipping process ensures peace of mind, allowing you to check its progress and estimated arrival time.

  4. Worldwide Shipping: Whether you're in the UK or abroad, your piece will be shipped with the same level of care and professionalism, ensuring it arrives safely, no matter the destination. International shipping requires additional considerations, including customs clearance, but rest assured, every measure is taken to ensure a smooth delivery process.

  5. Insurance: All items are insured during transit, offering you peace of mind that your artwork is protected. This ensures that in the rare case of loss or damage, a resolution process is in place to compensate for the value of the artwork.

Flexible Shipping Options

I understand that some clients may have specific preferences for how their artwork is shipped. If you would like to use your own courier service, or require a particular shipping method, I am open to working with you—just get in touch, and we can discuss the best approach.

For domestic UK deliveries, a White Glove Service (van delivery) may be possible for an extra level of care. This is an ideal option for those wanting the utmost attention and handling for their piece, ensuring it is delivered safely and securely without relying on standard courier services. Let’s discuss the options that best suit your needs.

Canvas Shipping & Additional Services

My canvases are typically sent rolled to ensure safe transport and to minimise shipping costs. However, if you prefer your canvas to be stretched before shipping, I can arrange this through a company in Cambridge. This will come at an additional cost and will add to the overall delivery time and expense. This service is particularly beneficial for those who want their artwork to be ready to hang upon arrival.

If you are unsure whether to receive your canvas rolled or stretched, feel free to reach out, and I will gladly provide guidance on what works best for your situation. Some collectors prefer the flexibility of having their own local framer stretch the canvas, while others appreciate the convenience of having it done before shipping. Either way, I am happy to accommodate your preference.

Why I Incur the Cost of Packaging

Packaging artwork is not just about placing it in a box—it’s about safeguarding your investment. I personally cover the cost of packaging materials, ensuring your artwork is wrapped, cushioned, and protected properly. This ensures your piece arrives without compromise, no matter how far it travels.

Proper packaging also maintains the integrity of the piece, preventing dents, scratches, or damage caused by mishandling during transit. While it may seem like an additional expense, it is a necessary precaution that ensures the value of the artwork is preserved.

No Refunds on Originals – Here’s Why

Due to the delicate nature of original artworks and the costs associated with shipping and packaging, I do not offer refunds on original pieces. However, should your artwork arrive damaged, I will work with you to resolve the issue promptly. Please contact me immediately with photos of both the artwork and its packaging so we can assess the situation together.

By maintaining a no-refund policy on originals, I ensure that each piece is carefully inspected before being shipped, and every precaution is taken to protect its quality. This policy is also in place to uphold the value and exclusivity of original works.

The Value of Trust & Peace of Mind

Investing in art should be an exciting and reassuring experience. I take every precaution to ensure your artwork arrives just as it left my studio—pristine, well-packaged, and delivered by a trusted courier.

When you purchase from me, you’re not just buying art—you’re investing in quality, care, and professionalism. While some may begrudge paying for delivery, the reality is that a cheap courier service simply isn’t worth the risk when it comes to original, irreplaceable artworks.

With each order, I aim to provide an exceptional experience, not just in the artwork itself but also in the way it is handled and delivered. I believe that art is more than just an object—it is a meaningful creation that deserves the best care from start to finish.
